Grants of up to $1,000 to USA teachers and educational support staff to benefit Native American students. Funding is intended to address unmet needs in schools and classrooms serving preschool, elementary, secondary, or college Native students. Eligible uses of funding include resource materials, supplies, equipment, professional development, field trips and transportation, and/or stipends to support bringing community liaisons into the classroom.

Past Projects have included:

  • Teaching students about traditional methods of dehydrating foods
  • Incorporating culturally representative books about and by Native peoples into a school's library
  • Coordinating visits of Native community members to classrooms to help students reconnect with local cultural knowledge
  • Building a greenhouse
  • Developing, producing, and distributing lesson plans centered on Native cultures

Dreamstarter Teacher projects may be one school-year long project or two different projects for the fall and spring semesters. All Dreamstarter Teacher funds must be used during the period of August 15, 2021 — June 30, 2022.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

• Native or non-Native teachers or support staff (for example, librarian) who teach and/or support Native students are eligible to apply.
• Schools may be located on federally or state-recognized Indian reservations, Rancherias, Pueblos, communities or in Alaska Native villages or in urban areas in the United States.
• Students are defined as preschool/Head Start, elementary, secondary, and college students.
• Classes do not need to be 100% Native to be eligible but the majority of students served by the Dreamstarter Teacher grant must be Native.

• Graduate coursework expenses are not eligible.
• Applicants must be staff at a school. Staff at other organizations (other nonprofits, Boys & Girls Clubs, etc.) are not eligible.
• No more than 2 educators per school are eligible to apply.
• Grant reporting, including photos and/or video showing how funds were used, is required at the grant period end.
• Grant funds may not be used for activities that discriminate on the basis of race, color and national origin, LGBTQ status, sex, and/or disability.

Pre-Application Information:

- May 4, 2021: Online Applications open
- July 8, 2021: Online applications are due by 11:59 pm EDT.
- August 3, 2021: Running Strong notifies successful applicants.
- August, 15 2021: Receive 1st $500 grant for the fall semester or entire $1,000 grant (depending on request)
- January 2022: Receive 2nd $500 grant (if needed) for spring semester
- June 30, 2022: Grant period ends and all grant monies must be spent.
- August 15, 2022: All receipts and Grant Reporting due

If approved, Dreamstarter Teacher grants will be disbursed in one of two ways:
(1) Two disbursements of up to $500 each made out to the individual applicant
(2) One disbursement of up to $1,000 made out to the school or school district

More than one educator from the same school may apply. However, no more than two educators will be selected per school.
