Request a Grant Writer

Grants to USA nonprofits, agencies, tribes, educational institutions, and historic properties associated with religious organizations to conserve or preserve historic collections and properties that are nationally significant. Funding is intended for projects that modernize infrastructure and restore trust with local communities.

Collections include artifacts, museum collections, documents, sculptures, and other works of art.

Properties include historic districts, buildings, sites, structures, and objects.

All projects must be nationally significant. This means that the proposed grant project concerns resources that are:

  • Listed as a National Historic Landmark; or
  • Listed in the National Register of Historic Places at the national level of significance; or
  • A collection of national significance

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Preservation projects - minimum request of $125,000 and maximum $500,000 Federal share.
- Collections projects - minimum request of $25,000 and maximum $500,000 Federal share

Eligibility:

  • City or township governments
  • County governments
  • Independent school districts
  • Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized)
  • Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
  • Nonprofits that do not have a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
  • Private institutions of higher education
  • Public and State controlled institutions of higher education

  • State governments

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Who Is Eligible to Apply?
- Nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3), U.S. organizations
- Units of state or local government
- Federally-recognized Indian Tribes, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiian Organizations, as defined by 54 USC § 300300
- Educational institutions
- Historic properties and collections associated with active religious organizations

- Federal agencies funded by the Department of the Interior and Related Agencies with the exception of the National Park Service (NPS).
- Grants will not be available for work on sites or collections owned by the NPS.
- Other federal agencies collaborating with a nonprofit partner to preserve the historic properties or collections owned by the federal agency may submit applications through the nonprofit partner.

Individual projects, properties, or collections that have received a SAT grant in the past are not eligible for additional funding.

What is Not Funded?
- Acquisition (i.e. purchase in fee simple or interest) of collections or historic properties
- Survey or inventory of historic properties or cataloging of collections
- Long-term maintenance or curatorial work beyond the grant period
- Interpretive or training programs
- Reconstruction of historic properties
- Moving historic properties or work on historic properties that have been moved
- Construction of new buildings
- Historic structure reports and collection condition assessments, unless they are one component of a larger project to implement the results of these studies by performing work recommended by the studies
- Cash reserves, endowments or revolving funds
- Costs of fund-raising campaigns
- Costs of work performed prior to grant award
- For Federal agency grantees – Federal salaries, agency overhead, or administrative costs

Pre-Application Information:

Applications must be submitted through Grants.gov by December 10, 2019 at 11:59 PM ET.

Grants will be awarded through a competitive process and require a dollar-for-dollar, non-Federal match, which can be cash or documented in-kind.

Please note there are two separate applications: one for preservation projects and one for projects involving collections.
