Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants to USA, Canada, and International students to pursue photography education and to produce a body of work that promotes world peace and cultural understanding. Requests will be accepted from associate degree, undergraduate, and graduate students at accredited IHEs throughout the world. Grants are awarded to visual journalists to help them produce projects that inspire change by addressing socially significant topics.

The Alexia Grants were created 30 years ago to support still photographers and are administered by the Foundation and the endowed Alexia Chair at The Newhouse School at Syracuse University. The Alexia Student Grant is awarded to enable current college student photographers to produce substantial bodies of work that share the Foundation’s goals of promoting world peace and cultural understanding. Work that helps bring about change is more valued.

The strength of the applicant's written proposal will be judged equally to their photographic skills. The Grant goes to those who clearly and concisely propose significant projects that share in the Foundation’s mission and who demonstrate the ability to accomplish their proposals as demonstrated by the images submitted with the proposal.

Student applicants are encouraged to consider proposing projects close to where they are. The Foundation's experience is that they are more likely to produce a successful body of work if they can easily access the setting where they will produce the work. Most student grant recipients had already started working on the project for which they received an Alexia grant.

The first place grant recipient receives a semester-long fellowship that pays tuition for three courses at Syracuse University. The recipient is also the graduate research assistant for The Alexia Chair at The Newhouse School during the semester.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be actively pursuing a graduate, undergraduate or associate degree in an accredited college or university in the U.S. or internationally or have graduated in May 2019 or be currently on an internship. For most students, that means they are enrolled full time in classes. For others, they may be on an internship before completing their degree or are working on their master’s project as part of a master’s degree. PhD students are eligible if they are actively pursuing their degree.

Applicants are not eligible if they have graduated as of the end of 2018.

No student who has worked as a professional photographer for more than one (1) year is eligible, including internships that total more than one year.

Pre-Application Information:

The Foundation will begin accepting applications for 2020 grants on Sept. 14, 2020. The deadline for The Alexia 2020 Competition is Oct. 5, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern U.S. Time.

Winners will be announced approximately Nov. 17, 2020.

Alexia recognizes that the profession more and more calls for a diverse range of story forms. Therefore, while submissions must have a set of still photographs, applicants may also submit other story forms as part of their grant application submission. Those may include audio, video, VR or any other visual format.

Only one application per person each year will be accepted.
