Grants of up to $7,000 to Louisiana nonprofit organizations and institutions for humanities projects that are accessible for local residents. Funding is intended for a range of programs including documentary projects, scholarly research, digital humanities projects, and educational initiatives. Humanities scholars must play a central role in all stages of a project as planners, speakers, resource persons, panelists, and/or evaluators. Representatives of the community must be involved in all phases of a project to complement the presence of the humanities scholars.

LEH Rebirth Grants support programmatic initiatives focused on the humanities. Eligible projects include:

  • Free public humanities programs that involve audience participation and discussion, documentary photography, podcast, and radio projects
  • Digital humanities projects including websites and online documentation of Louisiana history and culture
  • New and continuing scholarly research about Louisiana
  • Assistance with publication projects and humanities-based educational initiatives

The LEH promotes subjects and themes that fall within one or more of the following concentration areas:

  • General Humanities
  • Education and Teacher Institutes
  • Louisiana History and Culture
  • Museums and the Humanities

LEH funds cannot be used to support the following types of projects:

- Research, writing and publication of material targeted exclusively or primarily for a scholarly audience
- Scholarships and fellowships
- Course work for academic credit, except for teacher institutes
- Museum or library acquisitions
- Construction or renovation (capital improvements projects)
- Institutional staffing or any other form of operational support
- Social or political action
- Public information campaigns

- Indirect costs (overhead) of sponsoring organizations

The LEH typically does not award grants to individuals.

All documentary film programs are funded through the Create Louisiana grant. Film projects are not eligible through Rebirth.
