Deadline Date:

Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 to Louisiana nonprofit organizations and institutions for humanities projects that are accessible for local residents. Funding is intended for a range of programs including documentary projects, scholarly research, digital humanities projects, and humanities-based educational initiatives. Humanities scholars must play a central role in all stages of a project as planners, speakers, resource persons, panelists, and/or evaluators. Representatives of the community must be involved in all phases of a project to complement the presence of the humanities scholars.

The LEH promotes subjects and themes that fall within one or more of the following concentration areas:

- General Humanities
- Education and Teacher Institutes
- Louisiana History and Culture
- Museums and the Humanities

Eligible projects include free public humanities programs that involve audience participation and discussion; documentary photography, podcast, and radio projects; digital humanities projects including websites and online documentation of Louisiana history and culture, new and continuing scholarly research about Louisiana, and assistance with publication projects and humanities-based educational initiatives.

LEH encourages projects that generate new content that can be incorporated into "64 Parishes" magazine and website, two LEH initiatives that make the humanities available to the general public.

For specific program guidelines and details, see the General Application Guidelines page in Pre-Application Information below.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Grant awards range from $500 to $5,000.

Term of Contract:

Projects will ideally occur between November 1, 2019, and November 29, 2020.

Projects awarded typically begin in the calendar year following submission of application. For instance, a 2019 Rebirth Grant application will typically fund a project to occur in the 2020 calendar year.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The LEH awards grants to nonprofit groups, organizations and institutions operating in the state of Louisiana. However, the LEH will accept applications from ad hoc groups formed for the purpose of planning and implementing humanities programs.

If sponsoring organization is not a nonprofit, a fiscal agent is required. A fiscal agent is an established IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that agrees to accept donations on behalf of a group that does not have IRS tax exemption.

LEH funds cannot be used to support the following types of projects:
- Creative and performing arts (theater, dance, music, opera, etc.)
- Research, writing and publication of material targeted exclusively or primarily for a scholarly audience
- Scholarships and fellowships
- Course work for academic credit, except for teacher institutes
- Museum or library acquisitions
- Construction or renovation (capital improvements projects)
- Institutional staffing or any other form of operational support
- Social or political action
- Public information campaigns
- Archival materials without a public component

Within the actual budget, LEH grant funds, as a rule, cannot be used for the following purposes:
- Food, entertainment or liquor costs
- Expenses incurred prior to the grant award date
- Equipment purchases
- Indirect costs (overhead) of sponsoring organizations

The LEH typically does not award grants to individuals.

Film and video projects are NOT eligible under the Rebirth grant stream, as these projects are funded through the CreateLouisiana grant stream.

Pre-Application Information:

The LEH will begin accepting applications for the 2019 LEH Rebirth Grants on July 1, 2019, 12:00 AM. The deadline is 11:59 PM on August 31, 2019.

Notification of awards will be made by October 15.

Applicants for research and publishing initiatives should provide letter of interest or proof of contract from a publisher, or detail other means of reaching the public.

The LEH office staff is available to assist prospective applicants. All professionally trained in the humanities, they assist in project design, connecting applicants with resource groups and scholars, and helping project designers complete budgets.

Rebirth grants are funded through an award by the National Endowment for the Humanities. To apply, applicant organization must first have or obtain a valid Dun and Bradstreet Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number, and register (or have an active registration) in the System for Award Management (SAM). The initial SAM registration can take up to six weeks.

Project sponsors are required to show applicant cost share equal to or greater than the LEH contribution. This support may be either in actual cash or in the form of in-kind contributions. For most sponsors, this obligation is met through volunteer time, contributed equipment and supplies, contributed facilities, and indirect costs.
