Fellowships of $70,000 per year to USA, Canada, and International scholars to carry out postdoctoral research at IHEs and nonprofit research institutions. Funding is intended for projects in the areas of humanities, social sciences, engineering, natural sciences, and health research. Requests are accepted from Canadian scholars for fellowships at Canadian or international institutions, and to international scholars seeking fellowships at Canadian institutions.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country's economic, social and research-based growth. The program is jointly administered by Canada’s three federal granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). CIHR has been designated as the operational lead for the implementation of the program.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program allows highly motivated and competitive researchers to realize their full potential and develop their careers. Upon completion of their fellowships, Banting fellows will be well positioned to contribute to the continued growth of Canada's research capacity and the country's economic and social prosperity.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program is distinguished from existing postdoctoral fellowships programs by its emphasis on the synergy between an applicant’s individual merit and potential to launch a successful research-intensive career, and the host institution’s commitment to the research program, environment with which the applicant is to be affiliated, and alignment with the institution's strategic priorities. As such, an applicant’s application to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program must be completed in full collaboration with the proposed host institution.

The objective of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is to:

  •  Attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally;
  •  Develop their leadership potential;
  •  Position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow

Fellowships are distributed equally among:

  •  The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
  •  The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
  •  The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)
